Standard 7: Media Leadership and Career Development
I was 15 Minutes editor this year. It's a unique section in that it is more flexible with content and design than the rest of the HiLite publication. Since timeliness is not a requirement for students and teachers to be featured, I was able to plan ahead. It was my goal to have enough content for two spreads each month. During maestros, I distributed assignments for the month ahead, giving content-gatherers plenty of time to find good photo and interview opportunities. I also worked to include online-exclusive material in order to maximize the use of the online platform and prevent its becoming a carbon copy of the print issue. Understanding the process with which people gather content, I've learned how to work with other staff members in order to produce visually-attractive and informative spreads. Although I did not create a manual for 15 Minutes, I did work on a writing checklist when I was writing coach in hopes of reducing the amount of changes that reporters needed to make come time for conferencing and proofreading.
